The Root of the Matter

Breaking Free from the Past

About

"The Root of the Matter: Breaking Free from the Past", explores the intricate lives of two families, each featuring a man with two wives. In both families, the husband's favoritism towards one wife over the other creates a complex web of emotions and conflicts. The less favored wife feels threatened and insecure, responding in different ways. The competition between the two wives generates tension and conflict, exacerbated by the husband's favoritism, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment.

However, one family's story showcases the transformative power of faith and perseverance. Hannah, the beloved first wife of Elkanah, understands her issue and its underlying cause. She recognizes God's sovereignty in closing her womb and seeks a solution through prayer and faith. In contrast, Rachel, her barren counterpart in the other family, turns to mandrakes instead of seeking divine intervention. Penninah, the fertile yet unloved second wife of Elkanah, fails to identify the root cause of her problem, leading to a futile cycle of frustration, disappointment, and despair. She exhausts herself fighting the wrong battle, unaware that the problem persists, and she hasn't addressed its underlying cause.

Similarly, Rachel, the loved wife in the other family, mirrors Penninah's folly. She, too, fails to seek God's intervention, attempting to treat symptoms without understanding the underlying disease. This approach may temporarily alleviate the symptoms but allows the disease to progress, causing harm and suffering.

Identifying the causative factors of a problem requires effort, patience, and a willingness to dig deeper. We must take the time to understand the underlying causes of our problems and tackle them head-on. This requires total surrender and righteousness, like Elisha, who burned his bridges, severing ties with his past. The Apostles sold everything for Christ's service, unlike the rich young man who clung to his wealth. Righteousness, when deeply ingrained, leaves a lasting impact, even in our bones, like Elisha's bones, whose works continued after his death. The ultimate solution lies in prayer to the One True God, the recapper of everything.

But what happens when the root cause is an internal issue, like greed and pride? This insidious force can lead us away from God and His plans for our lives. Through the stories of Hannah, Rachel, Elisha, and others, we see the importance of trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, even in the face of suffering.
